Intimate Partner Violence against Men: My Personal Experience as a Victim

Domestic violence against men is a term describing violence that is committed against men by the man’s intimate partner. It occurs virtually in every society in varying degrees. This could manifest through physical aggression, emotional abuse, controlling or domineering, intimidating and humiliating among others.

Domestic violence against men is hard to believe partly because men are not helping matter in area of speaking out when they are abused by their partners.

As a married man of over three decades, I’ve experienced various degrees of intimate partner violence in my marriage. However, I am no longer a victim but a survivor of the domestic violence, while my marriage is intact and in peace. This is due to many steps I took but all based on speaking out.

Sometimes ago, I was listening to a Christian programme on television and the preacher urged his viewers to give thanks for God’s goodness in the following areas:

Ø  For His protection.

Ø  For His provision.

Ø  For the cloth we put on

Ø  For the warm bed we sleep on etc.

At this point I remembered a night of hot argument between me and my wife. After a prolonged disagreement, she said I would not sleep on my bed that night and true to it, she poured water on my bed and it became very wet and uncomfortable to sleep on. Before then, sleeping on a warm bed was the least thing I could pray for.

My full life story as a victim of intimate partner violence was narrated via my write up in two of my previous articles on my blog page. The first was titled “Intimate Partner Violence against Men: Effect of Nagging on Victim’s Life Expectancy” published on 3rd of October, 2020; while the second was titled “Intimate Partner Violence against Men: The Humiliation Component” published on 7th October, 2020. Kindly read these articles for details.

According to a friend of mine and also a Clinical Psychologist, intimate partner torture on men could lead to psychological, emotional, behavioral or anxiety disorders. “This may result in an untimely death or disability of the victim, if such abuse persists unabated.” He concluded.

In the course of our discussion I decided, there and then, to positively touch as many lives as possible through my writing and organized seminars for men. Hence, the birth of HearMan Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization advocating for the eradication of domestic predicament called Intimate Partner Violence against Men in Nigeria.

It is equally important to inform my men folks, particularly if you are not the battering type that if you are a victim you are not alone, rich or not so rich. An abusive woman respects no status. So, speak out now!

DANGERS OF VERBAL ABUSE IN RELATIONSHIPS

ERADICATION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN   Verbal Abuse Breeds Physical Violence in Romantic Relationships   It is important to note and be reminded that marriage is an institution established by God Himself. The first marriage in the Bible was between the first man and first woman on earth, in the persons of Adam and Eve. They lived together with their respective and joint responsibilities to fulfill the covenant of God for fruitfulness and multiplication. It won't therefore, be out of order to make reference to the Word of God i.e. the Bible for a deeper analysis of the subject matter. The Book of Proverbs 14:29 says "Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly." Here, the Bible makes us to understand that we are all naturally prone to anger. Hence, anyone can be angry at any time and for any reason, depending on individual’s disposition. Disposition determines one’s character. The exposition of the a...
