Violence against Men (IPVAM) in Nigeria: A Case study of Babangida and his wife
In many developed countries and
some developing countries, incidences of domestic violence perpetrated by their
partners have been reported by men. However, the position of authority and
superiority accorded the male gender in the African culture tend to give
credence to the believe by many people that domestic violence perpetrated by
women on men is non-existent in this environment. Even though there is paucity
of available empirical data on violence against men in Nigeria, is this to say that
it does not exist? (Domestic Violence against Men: Myth or Reality in the
Nigerian Setting? (Esther Asekun-Olarinmoye, Asekun-Olarinmoye OS, Adebimpe WO,

The case under review answers the
above question that, the fact that domestic violence against men in Nigeria is
grossly underreported for many reasons, it is indeed happening and also on the
increase in the recent times.
The Editor of The Guardian
newspaper reported and published an article on 27 October, 2020 titled: “Wife
cuts husband’s manhood for impregnating another lady in Taraba.” In the report,
“a middle-aged woman, on Sunday, reportedly cut off her husband’s manhood in
Taraba State for allegedly impregnating another woman.” A source who is also a
neighbor to the victim confirmed, the newspaper stated “that the wife cut the
manhood of her husband because he impregnated another woman.
According to the newspaper, it
was gathered at the weekend that the man, simply identified as Babangida but
popularly known as Bangis, who is in his 30s, suffered severe injuries on his
genitals after his wife attempted to cut off his dick. It was reported that the
incident happened at Appawa community, a surburb of Lau Local Government area
at about 12.15am when Babangida was asleep.
When asked why she made attempts
to cut off her husband’s manhood, the woman replied: “The Bible says we should
cut off anything that can make one to sin.”
Additional information made
available in the report was that the couple were yet to have a child.
Part of the publication confirmed
the high rate of frequency of domestic abuse against men in Nigeria when it
disclosed that this reported domestic violence allegation was coming about four
months after the police arrested 32-year-old housewife, Haliman Umar, who cut
off her husband’s dick with a knife in the same state for marrying another
wife.
